Adventure Cycling Association (ACA) seeks a Chief People & Culture Officer to oversee an employee experience that develops and retains the best talent for our organization and creates an open, reflective, and inclusive culture. Reporting to the CEO, the CP/CO will develop and execute the HR strategy for the organization and partner with the Executive Team to execute on the vision.

This is a great opportunity for a seasoned, accomplished human resources leader to join Adventure Cycling at a pivotal time in the organization’s evolution. This role will own the development and execution of our key talent management and culture processes across the organization, including integrating our core human resources and recruiting functions. This person will be critical in advancing Adventure Cycling’s justice and equity goals by improving HR processes in order to build an inclusive community. This person will be comfortable with ambiguity in a complex organization and develop strategies and implement programs that inspire, motivate and develop our employees. While we prefer this key leadership and culture position to be based in Missoula, for the right candidate, we would be open to this person working remotely, with multiple, extended trips to be on-site with our team in Missoula.

Responsibilities

Strategic Human Resources

  • As a member of ACA’s Executive Team, translate business strategy into HR strategy.
  • Develop and implement a human resources plan that aligns with the overall mission and strategy of the organization, resulting in innovative, best practices and policies that will service the full range of ACA’s HR needs and help build a high-performing culture of success, accountability, transparency and collaboration.
  • Ensure the organization has the right structure and talent to meet short- and long-term organizational goals and objectives. This will include talent pipeline development, innovative recruitment & sourcing, and understanding larger employment trends.
  • Develop and cultivate relationships and systems for ACA and employees in ways that contribute to satisfaction, productivity, motivation, and morale.
  • Work with CMO to define and implement internal communication strategy that connects internal and external culture, and facilitates cross-collaboration in pursuit of broader organizational goals.
  • Ensure staff develop and/or enhance necessary skills and competencies for effective performance and provide training opportunities for staff
  • Help supervisors identify potential and cultivate leadership among all staff.
  • Ensure supervisors have the appropriate skills and necessary training to effectively lead the organization.

HR Operations

  • Ensure collaborative, solutions-based employee relations approach; provide ongoing review of policies/practices governing workplace rules/conduct.
  • Develop and lead the performance management program to ensure accountable, fair and consistent staff evaluation.
  • Develop processes to support staff skill and career development.
  • Develop a compensation review process that promotes pay equity and transparency.
  • Develop and lead recruiting and hiring processes that center equity and justice. Provide support to staff on hiring committees.
  • Maintain, improve and implement excellent orientation and onboarding.
  • Supervise and mentor the HR Compliance Manager and vendor/volunteers/consultants as needed.

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion

  • Create strategy and serve as key member and champion of the organization’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion working group, shepherding key DEI initiatives as appropriate.
  • In collaboration with the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion working group, contribute to the annual development of objectives related to advancing equity. Lead the internal justice strategies that support the mission of Adventure Cycling.
  • Drive and support staff engagement, belonging, listening and learning across Adventure Cycling, in partnership with leadership.
  • Cultivate multiple talent pipelines to reach diverse candidates.
  • Conduct an audit of Adventure Cycling’s HR operations, policies, procedures to assess barriers to justice, equity, and inclusion. Develop processes and policies to remove those barriers.
  • Develop and implement strategies to improve organizational culture, maximize employee engagement, and monitor organizational climate.
  • Build diversity, equity, and inclusion awareness by strategically partnering with all functions and integrating high-impact DEI strategies into talent acquisition; talent and performance management (e.g., succession planning and mentoring); and training.
  • Develop Adventure Cycling as an attractive, inclusive place for staff to do their best work.

Skills and Attributes

  • 5+ years progressive experience in HR disciplines with strategic focus, knowledge of performance management processes and/or learning and development frameworks.
  • 3+ years providing accountability for equity, diversity, and inclusion in organizations or equivalent experience.
  • 3 – 5 years of experience managing people leaders; experience coaching and influencing leaders.
  • Proven experience in a leadership role in a growing, evolving organization.
  • HR/Talent management experience with both in-person and distributed/remote staff; ideally having experience with a mission-driven nonprofit organization.
  • “People person” with ability to listen, understand, and connect with employees at all levels of the organization and people from diverse backgrounds and life experiences.
  • Strong communications skills, including verbal, written, presentation, and developing internal communication strategies. Ability to engage with an open mind in brave conversations.
  • Ability to understand business functions and metrics within our organization
  • Experience in overseeing H.R. policies, systems, compensation and benefit programs.
  • Ability to proactively identify and diagnose organizational needs and deliver relevant solutions
  • Demonstrated change leadership and management skills
  • High tolerance for ambiguity, ability to work with limited day-to-day guidance, structure and drive work with little direction.
  • High sense of personal responsibility and integrity, and the experience and confidence, to effectively address sensitive HR and organizational issues with complete discretion and confidentiality.

Education and Experience

Candidates should have professional backgrounds in Human Resource management. Candidate should have 5-7 years previous experience. Bicycling and bicycle touring experience preferred.
